Tattoo, piercing, pregnancy and breastfeeding: what you need to know

Are you pregnant or breastfeeding, and fancy a tattoo or a piercing? At TATTOO ON MOVE, the rule is simple: we do not tattoo or pierce during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Here is why, and how to prepare your project for later.

Why we wait

• The risk of infection: a tattoo or a piercing is a wound that has to heal. An infection, even a rare one, could require treatment that is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• Changing skin: during pregnancy the skin stretches, and the belly and chest change shape. A tattoo done at that time may become distorted afterwards.
• Caution: we take no unnecessary risks for you and your baby.

For any question about your health, ask your doctor or midwife for advice.

Preparing your project in the meantime

Nothing stops you from already thinking about your design, or from dropping by the tattoo shop to talk it over with the tattoo artist. After the birth and once you have finished breastfeeding, a tattoo linked to your child can take many forms:

• their name or date of birth;
• the print of their foot or hand;
• a symbol: a flower, a star, a little animal, a drawing that represents them.

A piercing and jewellery already in place

For a piercing that has already healed, the navel in particular, the skin of the belly stretches during pregnancy. Come and talk to us at the tattoo shop: our piercers will advise you on suitable jewellery. Our piercings are shown on the Piercing page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get a tattoo while pregnant?

Not with us: we do not tattoo during pregnancy. Your project will wait until after the birth and the end of breastfeeding.

Can you get a tattoo while breastfeeding?

No, not that either: we wait until breastfeeding has finished, as a precaution against the risk of infection and the treatments it might require.

Can you get pierced while pregnant?

No: we do not pierce during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Can you prepare your tattoo during pregnancy?

Yes. Drop by the tattoo shop to talk it over with the tattoo artist: you will have time to let your idea mature, and the session can take place after breastfeeding.
