As its name suggests, the smiley is a piercing that is only visible when you smile. It goes through the frenulum of the upper lip, the thin strip of skin that tightens when you pull your upper lip away.

It is a very low-pain piercing, and it heals very quickly (1 to 2 months).

The first jewellery fitted on the day of the piercing is a horseshoe, in a size chosen to suit you.

Once it has healed, you can choose to keep the horseshoe or switch to ring-style jewellery.

In the long term, the smiley carries a risk of rejection. The skin holding the piercing becomes thinner and thinner until it disappears. The piercing must then be removed. This is why some people cannot keep it for life.
