The surface piercing can be done in many places:

• nape
• chest
• cheekbone (cat eye)
• in front of the ear (surface tragus)
• tongue

It is done with a surface bar. A bar runs under the skin, and only the two balls at the ends are visible. Depending on the size of the jewellery, a wider or narrower gap between the two balls can be chosen. When you want to change the jewellery, you generally only change the balls.

With any surface piercing, you need to avoid catching it so as not to risk rejection. A piercing is said to reject when the skin holding it becomes thinner and thinner until it disappears completely. So take care not to catch it too often on necklaces!

This piercing heals in 2 to 4 months, which is fairly quick for a piercing.

Although it is not painless, it is one of the least painful piercings.
