At the time of piercing, we will fit a straight piece of jewellery with a flat disc on the inside of the mouth and a ball on the outside. The bar is deliberately longer to allow for slight swelling of the area at the start of healing. The swelling does not usually appear straight away. So at the beginning you need to take great care not to catch the post on your teeth, especially at mealtimes. Once the skin has swollen, the bar will be less of a nuisance. The area will then gradually go down until the bar becomes uncomfortable again. You then need to come back to the shop to swap the bar for a shorter one. This is possible from 10 days, but every skin heals at its own pace: your piercer will tell you when the time has come. This change will let you finish healing comfortably. Allow about 2 months for a labret piercing to heal, but the first 2 weeks are the most demanding. During this time, it is best to avoid food that is too hard, too hot or too spicy, and above all alcohol, which can increase the swelling. On the other hand, you can indulge in ice cream and cold drinks, which will soothe you and limit the swelling. Once your piercing has healed, you can, if you wish, change the jewellery and opt for: - Another straight piece: most of our clients choose simple balls, but we stock all sorts of compatible jewellery. We advise switching to a plastic post after healing; it needs changing regularly, but it protects your teeth. - A ring: again, many people choose basics, but there is a wide choice! - A horseshoe: the famous open ring with two balls, which looks particularly good on a labret piercing. Before the piercing, we will always ask whether you would like to wear rings afterwards, so that we can choose a placement that lets the ring sit as snugly as possible against the lip. It is also very important to choose the right jewellery size to the millimetre for the best look and comfort, whether it is a ring or a straight piece. That is why we recommend having your first jewellery change at the shop. Be careful, too, not to get this piercing on impulse, because it leaves small scars that can be irreversible if the piercing has been worn for many years. That is why we take the time to choose and test the placement with you, using small dots made with a marker pen, so that your piercing suits your taste and shows off your face.
